Bought is not the same as received

Watch the shares arrive.

Your order matched in a second. But the shares don't reach your demat account straight away. Watch the calendar.

T, T+1 and settlement

  • T: trade day the day you buy — Your order is matched. Your broker takes the money from your trading account and sends you a contract note.
  • T+1: settlement day one working day later — The clearing corporation completes the swap: the seller's shares reach **your demat account**, and your money reaches the seller.

**Settlement** is the moment the money and shares actually change hands. Only then are the shares in your demat account.

In India all shares settle on **T+1** (since January 2023). Older books and guides may say T+2, which was the rule before.

T+1 counts **working days**, when the market is open. Pick the day you buy.

**Remember:** count one working day from the trade, skipping weekends and market holidays.
